FUTURE OF LIFE
“Future of Life” is one of the signature pavilions of Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan, produced by Hiroshi Ishiguro, a leading authority in robotics and a renowned professor. The project brought together a diverse team of collaborators, including the pavilion’s partner companies, directors, creators, technical engineers, and event management companies. FARO DESIGN contributed as Assistant to Architecture/Display Spaces, playing a key role in bridging the production team and the architecture team.
For the building’s exterior, “water” and “shores”—symbols of life—served as the primary design motifs. Based on this concept, the façade was designed so that filtered water continuously flows down and circulates along a black mesh membrane, giving the architecture a sense of life. On the ground floor, the reception is surrounded by circulating water, leading visitors to the introductory zone Journey of Life, which presents various entities long regarded in Japan as embodying life. An escalator was placed to connect the first and second floors, guiding visitors toward the main zone The Future of 2075, where a variety of scenes are designed to allow them to experience a future of coexisting with androids and robots. Beyond this, a dark staircase descending to the first floor serves as an antechamber to the zone “Mahoroba,” Life in the Next Millennium. The ceiling of this space was designed to make full use of the building’s maximum height, enhancing the sense of verticality and creating a dramatic setting to showcase beautiful androids representing future humans. In this space, visitors encounter the producer’s message, “We can design our own future and live the life we want.” before being guided back to the circulating-water area, completing the carefully designed visitor flow.

いのちの未来
「いのちの未来」は、2025年大阪・関西万博のシグネチャーパビリオンの一つとして、ロボット工学の第一人者・石黒浩教授によってプロデュースされ、協賛企業やディレクター、クリエイター、技術者、展示・運営会社など、数多くの協働メンバーがプロジェクトに参加した。ファロ・デザインは、プロジェクトマネジメント建築・展示空間補佐として参加し、プロデュースチームと建築チームとの橋渡し役を担った。
建築の外観は、いのちの象徴である水や渚をモチーフとして設計され、建築が生命感を纏うような外観を目指して、ろ過循環する水が黒いメッシュ膜の外壁面を流れ落ちる設計とした。内部空間では、循環する水に囲まれた1階に受付を配置し、その先に、古来より日本人がいのちを宿してきた様々なものを解説する導入展示「いのちの歩み」を設けた。次に2階へ向かうエスカレーターを配置し、中心的な展示「50年後の未来」へ導いた。ここではアンドロイドやロボットと共に生きる未来を体験させる様々なシーンを設計した。その後には1階へ降りる暗がりの階段を前室として、「1000年後のいのち”まほろば”」を設け、未来の人間を表現する美しいアンドロイドを演出するため、この空間の天井を建築高さ最大まで高く設計した。来館者はここで、プロデューサーからのメッセージ「人は自ら未来をデザインし、生きたいいのちを生きられる」を受け取り、最後は循環する水の空間に再び戻るという動線設計とした。
